Painting a grey metal filing cabinet and a wood veneer/laminate bookshelf?

I want to paint them both white. Will it work OK and look nice without the paint peeling off? How do I best prepare the surfaces and what type/s of paint should I use? I’d prefer not to use spray paint on the filing cabinet.

you’ll have to get primer for metal surfaces. then get paint for metal surfaces. Home Depot or Lowes paint dept. employees are very helpful.
